Photographing People—Portrait Lighting

May 16 - 17, 2020
Apply for the Workshop
Photographing People—Portrait Lighting will have us photographing people at the Hen House as well as in quaint downtown Henderson. You will learn to create the portrait lighting you desire, using natural light as well as studio lighting equipment and off-camera flash. We will make images on location at the Hen House as well as in the quaint downtown of Henderson, taking advantage of the historic structures and the country ambiance. Classroom sessions will be held in the 1850s vintage log cabin on the Hen House property.

People photography can be intimidating for some, so this is a perfect opportunity to practice your craft in a low-stress, low-risk environment. One of the highlights of the Photographing People—Portrait Lighting workshop is learning to use collapsible light reflectors to bring light in where you need it. You will also learn how to use studio lighting and off-camera flash to make stunning portrait photographs. Back in the Hen House cabin you will learn specific tips on how to post-process portrait images in Lightroom Classic and Color Efex Pro, a part of the Nik Software Suite from DxO Optics.

The workshop fee is $370 for couples and $270 for singles. This fee covers the workshop plus a night at the Hen House and all meals and refreshments. Each party will also receive a collapsible light reflector that is yours to keep. Hen House Photography Workshops are structured a bit like a prix fixe tasting menu. For one set price, each person can take part in whatever they wish.

Check-in is 1 p.m. on the first day. The workshop will run until around 4:00 p.m. on the afternoon of the second day. All Hen House Photography Workshops finish with an image review session, followed by a closing party in the Hen House cabin, including refreshments and a slideshow of your favorite images from the workshop.
