Your Best Photo Might Be Behind You

Your Rainbow PanoramaARos Museum of Modern Art Aarhus, Denmark

This photograph was made at the ARoS Museum of Modern Art in Aarhus, Denmark. At the top of the building is a space called Your Rainbow Panorama. It is a ring-like structure with rainbow tinted glass walls. As you walk along the view of Aarhus changes in amazing ways. We had made it about halfway around when I stopped to look behind our group. I was stunned to see the blazing colors as the glass tint shifted from red to purple. I love photographing people in space, so I worked quickly to capture the smartphone obsessed group of young women before they moved on. When we were passing through this space, I had no idea what was there. It wasn't until I turned around that I saw.

Sad Little PrincessGamla Stan Stockholm, Sweden

The Sad Little Princess photo above is another example of the best photo being behind you. While my wife and daughter were shopping in the old town of Gamla Stan in Stockholm, I made photographs on the street. This little human drama played out right behind me. The little girl's mother was heading into some store and the girl really wanted to go with. Her mother said no. The young girl was left stewing in her stroller, while her inattentive father texted away. She was not happy.

We humans often get tunnel vision, tightly focusing in on what is right in front of us. When out making photographs, we'd do better to emulate the owl, looking all around us to truly see all that is there.
